VII TanoTango Festival

Naples, September 8-13 2009

A festival which deeply links the guest and the host, both in terms of history and traditions: Naples and Buenos Aires, the Neapolitan song and the tango. For this reason the name of the festival has drawn on the term “Tano”, a short form for"Napolitano", which is a word still used in Buenos Aires to indicate all the immigrants of Italian origin, not necessarily of Neapolitan descent.

Castel Sant'Elmo

The Tano Tango festival is becoming a traditional appointment for both tango lovers and, more generally, for those interested in Argentine culture. Its speciality is to involve the most celebrated artists of the Argentinean Tango scene in the incredible beauty of Naples and of its surroundings.

Tango castles as sand castles which, sometimes magnificent, sometimes less so, always affordable by anybody, only exist when you act them and then linger in your memory as a wonderful experience; but also card castles, unexpressed dreams, unaccomplished wishes, deeply experienced but soon vanishing moments, as a blow on a candle.

Maschio Angioino

Locations: our tango castles traditionally are: Castel Nuovo, also called “Maschio Angioino” where the “Aires Tango”, a music group in between Tango and Jazz, loved by young people, will give a concert, followed by the exhibition of two world renowned dancers, Horacio Gadoy and Alejandra Mantiñan.

The other castle, the Sant’Elmo castle, whose name evokes so many tango memories, is linked to our festival since the first edition: there the grand gala evening will be held: concert by the Beltango orchestra, a Belgrade based group who already had an enormous success in our festival, uniting rigorous and very danceable tangos to excursion in the Balkan music which make their concert precious; logo piedigrottaafter the concert, milonga with live music, exhibitions of Neapolitan and international dancers and… fireworks on the sea, in connection to the Piedigrotta celebration, the historical fete of the Neapolitan tradition, during which, this year for the first time after fifty years, the statue of the Holy Virgin of Piedigrotta will be carried out in a procession.

The festival will open with a spectacular evening: we well watch sunset in the middle of the sea, more than one kilometre from the coast, on the North Pier of the Bagnoli area, where we will dance tango surrounded by the beauty of the city and by its recent history. Free entrance evening in which all the Maestros of the Festival will be introduced . Also free will be the entrance to the second part of the evening, at the Milonga Porteña, where also the last evening will be held, always free entrance, with the Beltango orchestra accompanying our dances with their live music. pontile
The free entrance for the first and last evenings, and the very inexpensive admittance fees for the other evenings are the fruit of a cost containing policy which makes our festivals one of the most affordable in the world: 7 euros for the evenings at ILVA, at the roof garden of the Mediterraneo Hotel, and for the concert at the Maschio Angioino.

The Ilva at Bagnoli is the club of the workers at the former ILVA steel plant (ITALSIDER), which, for good or bad, did shape the blue collar history of our city The Ilva club has a wonderful terrace over the sea, and has always been one of the locations of the festival.

A new location is the roof garden of the Hotel Mediterraneo, a wonderful terrace dominating downtown, very close to the harbour, and with a breathtaking vista, which will fascinate both the newcomers and those who already patronised it.

The grand evening will be held in the ultrapanoramic parade ground close to the battlements of Castel sant'Elmo; this, for 15 euros is certainly uncommon for an Argentinian Tango festival.

Always aiming to give the maximum possible value for money, we kept low the prices for tango classes: besides the almost free ( (5 euros) of the “absolute beginner” classes, for whoever wants to start tango for the first time, costs are such as to satisfy whoever wants to get deeper and deeper knowledge of the dance, steeply decreasing with the increased number of reserved classes: from 25 to 15 euros per class. However, we added a number of “special classes”, open to a maximum of five couples per class, which allow participants to engage in a more direct contact with the instructors. These classes are, obviously, more expensive, but always with a reasonable price.

No private classes will be organised. The “absolute beginner” classes wil be held by the instructors of the Milonga Porteña in its seat of Fuorigrotta (via Gennaro Capuozzo, 52 - www.tamotango.it); all other classes will be held at the Hotel Mediterraneo  (4 stars, in the centre of downtown), which will be the fulcrum of our festival, the location of the registration office, the meeting point from which the shuttle buses for the other locations will start and the place in which two evenings will be held.

Low prices do not imply bad quality (which, actually, is world-level); not speaking of the beauty of the locations, the cast, the reception system, the dinner with the maestros, the opportunity of lunching at the hotel at a fixed fare of 10 euros, the parking, and even the foot massages are only examples of the painstaking care of details which we use in organising "TanoTango", a festival around which the passion for our dance, the tango, pivots.
